MHD solar wind and astrophysical jets: theory and numerical studies
T. Kudoh

I mainly review the paper titled "Magnetic stellar winds - a 2-D generalization of the Weber-Davis model" written by Sakurai-san in 1985. The paper showed self consistent numerical steady solutions of MHD outflow from rotating stars. It had been difficult to find the multi-dimensional solutions of steady MHD outflow that accelerates from sub-slow-magnetosonic to super-fast-magnetosonic flow. The paper rearranged the basic equations and presented a numerical technique in order to find them. The paper demonstrated that the outflow is deflected poleward due to the magnetic force of spiraling field lines. This feature is called the "collimated outflow". The collimated outflow is very important not only for the solar wind but for astrophysical jets. Therefore, the paper had a great impact on the theory of astrophysical jets. I also review some related theoretical and numerical works about MHD outflows both for steady and non-steady solutions.
