Observations of Magnetic Fields
J. Chae

Observing magnetic fields is crucial for understanding the magnetic activity of the sun. In this talk I will first introduce my personal experience with Prof. Sakurai on magnetic field observation using the Okayama magnetograph, Solar Flare Telescope Magnetograph, and Hinode NFI and SP. Then I will talk about the technique of inferring plasma motion from the pattern of magnetic field based on the magnetic induction equation, and how this technique has impacted the study of magnetohydrodynamic processes on the solar surface such as turbulent diffusion, small-scale magnetic reconnection, and transport of magnetic helicity and magnetic energy. Finally I'll briefly comment on how to make use of magnetic field observation to predict eruptions in active regions.
